February 20, 2024Polish protesters have blocked the railway at the border with Ukraine by dumping construction debris onto it.
Video of the incident has surfaced on social media.
The actions of the protesters prompted a response from the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine. Its representative, Andriy Yusov, accused Polish farmers of xenophobia and “justifying genocide.”
“Any abuse of grain and bread for a people who survived the Holodomor is a deliberate, public manifestation of xenophobia and justification of genocide against Ukrainians. Allowing and tolerating such despicable acts is simply unacceptable,” Yusov wrote on Facebook.
It’s worth noting that earlier, Polish farmers spilled Ukrainian grain from a freight train and blocked the railway near the “Medyka-Shehyni” checkpoint. After the police arrived, the railway was unblocked. One of the organizers of the protest stated that the participants acted on emotions.
In response, “Ukrzaliznytsia” (Ukrainian Railways) stated that the train, from which Polish farmers spilled grain onto the railway, was supposed to go to Germany, not Poland. Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov called the actions of the Poles “another political provocation” aimed at “dividing our peoples.”
Earlier, Polish farmers announced that they would completely block the border with Ukraine. The protest organizers stated that they would block not only border crossings but also communication nodes and access roads to railway transshipment stations and seaports.
It was also reported that Polish farmers began blocking not only the Ukrainian border but also highways. At border crossings, Poles are not allowing vehicles to pass in either direction – even civilian ones. At some checkpoints, trucks have been waiting for up to 230 hours.
