13.02.2026 05:32In Belgium, Ukrainian children born after February 24, 2022 are being denied temporary protection.
This was reported on the website of the human-rights organization Promote Ukraine, which has been working in Brusselssince 2014.
As justification, the migration service cites the fact that these individuals did not live in Ukraine before the start of the full-scale war with Russia.
According to available information, adult Ukrainians who left the country because of the fighting relatively easily obtain temporary protection status along with social benefits. But their children born after February 24, 2022 are increasingly being refused temporary protection—on the grounds that they “did not live in Ukraine” before the war.
The outlet notes that children who are denied protection are left without health insurance, and there is even a risk of deportation.
It was previously reported that Belgium has tightened the rules for obtaining temporary protection. Earlier, Poland named the exact date for the cancellation of the special status for refugees from Ukraine.
