Europe lacks the capacity to arm both Ukraine and NATO simultaneously
07.06.2024 - 10:13The Biden administration is taking increasing risks to support Kyiv. The latest example is the White House’s decision to allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to use American weapons to strike targets on Russian territory. Additionally, NATO plans to send its personnel to Ukraine to train its army.
This is reported by Time columnist Ian Bremmer.
According to him, six months ago, Western leaders were not ready to discuss any of these changes, at least not publicly. However, recent Russian military successes and the hardened stance of the U.S. and its allies toward Vladimir Putin have “begun to blur these red lines.”
Meanwhile, the threat of conflict between Russia and the U.S. and other NATO members is increasing and becoming more realistic. The Kremlin does not intend to attack the alliance head-on but may find other ways to complicate life for alliance countries, including through cyberattacks, the columnist speculates.
There is also a clear risk that the Ukrainian Armed Forces might use Western weapons for attacks that affect the Russian civilian population. Alternatively, NATO instructors could be killed by Russian strikes on Ukraine. Any such scenario would lead to a further escalation of the situation, the author of the article believes.
“In general, do not be deceived by the appearance of a stalemate on the Ukrainian battlefield. There are growing dangers that could sharply and unexpectedly raise the stakes in this conflict,” Bremmer warns.
