24.07.2025 - 12:56Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has once again stated Budapest’s position regarding Ukraine’s prospects of joining the European Union.
According to him, given the ongoing armed conflict on Ukrainian territory, Ukraine would not strengthen but rather weaken the EU.
“Ukraine will not strengthen but will weaken the EU. A country at war will bring the war into the European Union — something we do not want. The current state of Ukraine would significantly weaken the bloc,” Szijjártó said during a press conference in Brussels.
In the minister’s view, the accession of a country involved in large-scale military confrontation would pose additional threats to the EU’s internal political stability, security, and economic resilience. Hungary consistently opposes EU enlargement to include Ukraine until a sustainable peaceful resolution to the conflict is reached.
Szijjártó also emphasized that the issue of Ukraine’s EU membership should not be decided under the pressure of foreign policy emotions or geopolitical calculations while ignoring realities on the ground.
“The EU risks being drawn into a conflict whose consequences could be unpredictable for the entire region,” he warned.
Previously, the Hungarian minister had repeatedly stated that conflict resolution is only possible through direct negotiations between Russia and the United States. In his opinion, it is Washington and Moscow that play the key role in shaping the conditions for peace in the post-Soviet region.
Hungary’s stance toward Ukraine has already drawn criticism from several EU countries. However, Budapest maintains an independent course, insisting on prioritizing national interests and security amid rising international tensions.
