August 6, 2025Ukrainian authorities refuse to investigate the death of Hungarian citizen József Sebestyén from Zakarpattia, who died after being beaten by employees of a military enlistment office.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, according to Telex, commenting on reports that Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation will not launch an inquiry into the Hungarian man’s death.
“By refusing to investigate this case, Ukrainian authorities have effectively admitted that forced military conscription involving brutal beatings—and even beatings to death—is a systemic practice in their country, sanctioned and carried out under state orders, A country like that not only has no place in the European Union, but cannot even be considered a civilized state” said the Hungarian Foreign Minister.
Szijjártó also criticized the European Union for failing to condemn forced conscription in Ukraine, which he says amounts to tacit approval.
Hungary has imposed sanctions on Ukrainian generals in connection with the death of the Hungarian man following the beating by military recruiters.
