March 5, 2024Despite Beijing sending its special envoy, Li Huey, to Ukraine, Europe and Russia to seek a political resolution to the war, Ukrainian diplomats encounter a cold reception in China itself, according to Bloomberg reports.
Ukrainian Ambassador Pavel Ryabikin has struggled to secure meetings since his arrival in the Chinese capital last summer, despite numerous requests to nearly 40 different ministries and municipalities. In contrast, Russia has organized numerous meetings and visits by its officials to China during the same period, including Putin’s engagements. The Chinese Foreign Ministry maintains that communication channels between China and Ukraine remain open.
Ukraine’s diplomatic support in China is also lacking among representatives from “global South” countries, with only a small fraction attending the Ukrainian embassy’s event commemorating the second anniversary of the invasion. Western diplomats, however, were more present. As for Li Huey’s tour, hopes for a significant resolution to the war are slim, according to the publication.
