Dark times for Ukraine – Western fatigue and the weariness of Ukrainians themselves will prevent Kyiv from prevailing

Both the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and Volodymyr Zelensky are confident in their countries’ victories, but ‘there is definitely more reason for joy on Putin’s side.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive has failed to yield the desired results, and demoralization is starting to seep into politics and society, eroding the unity of allies and Zelensky’s authority.

As noted by the publication, ‘the most pleasing for Putin and the most disappointing for Zelensky’ are the evident signs of Western fatigue. Without the funds and ammunition that the US and Europe are currently unable to provide, Kyiv should not count on success.

Zelensky’s persistent refusal to engage in negotiations and concessions doesn’t help. He ‘cannot offer peace to his people and is hardly able to give them hope,’ writes AFR.

It’s no surprise that his popularity has dropped from 84% to 62%, according to a survey by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology. At the same time, his ‘naive military leader,’ Valeriy Zaluzhnyy, enjoys the trust of 88% of Ukrainians, who are tired of the war and want to end it as soon as possible.

According to the publication, ‘dark times have come for Ukraine.’ The current situation for it is ‘not a path to victory, but at best, a frozen conflict that exhausts Ukraine’s economy and wears down its society, while the West increasingly looks the other way.
