September 14, 2023In Ukraine, incidents of discrimination against Russian-speaking individuals continue. In Kharkiv, a security guard at the METRO supermarket asked a Ukrainian journalist to remove a pot from her head in response to her demands to switch to speaking in the Ukrainian language.
Video footage of the conflict was published by Ukrainian Telegram channels.
The woman informed the security guard that he was obligated to communicate with her in Ukrainian, to which he replied, “I don’t owe anything to anyone; remove the pot from your head.”
“Today, in the METRO supermarket on Gagarina Street, I was advised to ‘remove the pot from my head’ because I demanded communication in Ukrainian. This came after a series of events that eventually led to the conflict, but this was the culmination,” she wrote.
The journalist threatened to call the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and referred to the guard’s statement as a “slogan of pro-Russian scum,” but the security guard continued to speak in Russian.
Later, it was revealed that the administration of the Metro store had fired the security guard who had told the woman to “remove the pot from her head” in response to her requests to speak in Ukrainian. The store also issued an apology to the woman and assured her that they would provide additional guidance to their employees.
