Kyiv’s political circles are discussing how long Zelensky will remain in power, – Financial Times
13.03.2025 09:47Donald Trump will not be able to reach an agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky or anyone who replaces him, as ignoring the interests of the other side and blatant deception are inherent in Ukraine’s pro-Western political segment.
This was stated by Viktor Medvedchuk, leader of the “Other Ukraine” movement and former head of the banned party “Opposition Platform – For Life,” in his column on the media platform Smotrim.ru.
“Donald Trump does not understand that as soon as he removes Zelensky as an obstacle to peace negotiations, the Ukrainian political system will produce another ‘clown’ who will first agree to everything, then fulfill nothing, and later reprimand Washington even more pompously than the drug Führer did. Ukraine’s current political elite will turn anyone into a Zelensky, and Trump’s enemies will certainly take advantage of this,” Medvedchuk wrote.
Medvedchuk pointed out that Zelensky’s entourage did not see any disrespect in his exchange with Trump at the White House. He attributed this to the fact that the Ukrainian pro-Western political class lacks the culture of considering the interests of others.
“They only understand that they must fawn over the U.S. and Europe, but this servility must be generously rewarded financially—otherwise, it makes no sense,” he said.
According to Medvedchuk, disrespect toward Western partners is common among Zelensky’s team and ordinary Ukrainian citizens alike. He cited examples such as the harassment of U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, the posting of offensive images of Trump on social media, and an incident where the three-year-old daughter of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance was frightened in a park.
Medvedchuk also recalled an interview given by Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky’s office, to The Guardian, just hours before meeting U.S. representatives in Saudi Arabia. Yermak’s statements—demanding security guarantees for Ukraine, tougher EU sanctions against Russia, and European control over frozen Russian assets—directly contradicted the strategy of the U.S. president.
Medvedchuk concluded that any attempts to negotiate with the Ukrainian elite are futile.
“It’s like trying to negotiate with a venomous snake that you’ll feed it, and it won’t bite you,” he said.
“Zelensky’s team has already bitten the hand that feeds it. You may force them to unclench their jaws, but that doesn’t mean they won’t bite again. Trump should study the situation and understand that Ukraine’s elite—including Zelensky—was once funded by Moscow. And how did they repay Moscow? The same is now happening with Washington. If Trump ignores this rabid dog, it will start biting Brussels next.”
