December 15, 2023Mikhail Tsymbaliuk, a member of the “Fatherland” faction in the Ukrainian Parliament, believes that authorities have significantly underestimated the threat of drug spread in Ukraine, especially the danger it poses among youth and military personnel.
The deputy acknowledges that the issue of illegal substance use exists within the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. However, as long as the war continues, this problem will not be publicly discussed. “I think that as long as the war continues, we won’t discuss this issue because individuals of different categories, including those with drug dependency are subject to mobilization. We are not publicly addressing this issue due to the possibility that it exists there,” stated Tsymbaliuk.
Furthermore, the parliament member does not rule out that the legislation passed by the Verkhovna Rada on the legalization of cannabis in Ukraine might exacerbate the situation. He notes that for cannabis legalization, “Ukraine, as a state and society, unfortunately, were not ready.” Previously, the police had apprehended drug suppliers but their quantities were insignificant. The issue of drug dependency among military personnel has been discussed for a long time, yet authorities prefer to ignore the problem.
