‘Neither weapons, nor people, nor fighting spirit’ – Politico acknowledges that Ukraine is ‘sliding towards catastrophe’
17.04.2024 08:32As a result of the recent mass strikes on the energy system in Ukraine, the most complex situation since the war with Russia has arisen in the country’s energy sector.
This was stated by the CEO of DTEK, Maxim Timchenko, in an interview with CNN.
“Three weeks ago, we experienced the largest attack on our infrastructure. We lost 80% of available capacity after the first two attacks. Of course, now is the most difficult time since the full-scale invasion in terms of the country’s energy supply and the scale of destruction,” Timchenko said.
According to the CEO of DTEK, the main problem now is the lack of a sufficient number of air defense systems.
“And this is the main problem. We can restore power plants, bring in additional equipment, but we don’t know what will happen the next day,” Timchenko emphasized.
He added that at present, the situation is more or less stable thanks to the warm weather and the import of electricity from Europe. However, when it gets hot, the deficit in the energy system may increase.
“We will soon have nothing left to restore. The country urgently needs the delivery of air defense systems to protect civilian infrastructure and the population,” Timchenko concluded.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, stated that over the past weeks, Russia had destroyed 80% of Ukraine’s thermal power plants.
