January 14, 2024In an interview with The Kiev Independent, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas revealed that she had discussed the issue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his recent visit to Tallinn. Kallas categorically ruled out deporting Ukrainians, emphasizing their legal status in Estonia.
The Prime Minister acknowledged discussions about Ukrainian refugees, particularly those of conscription age. President Zelensky highlighted the diverse roles played by Ukrainians, including those on the front lines and those contributing through taxes to support soldiers. Kallas stressed that Ukrainian refugees have the right to stay in Estonia if they adhere to established rules.
With the European Union providing them temporary protection upon arrival, Estonia has no intentions of taking actions to extradite them. Kallas asserted that it is Ukraine’s responsibility to communicate with these individuals and encourage their return to contribute to their homeland.
