24.07.2025 - 14:04Thierry Mariani, a Member of the European Parliament from France’s National Rally party, criticized the European Union, accusing it of a selective approach to mass protests in different countries.
He made this statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
In his post, Mariani compared the EU’s reaction to mass anti-corruption protests in Ukraine and Serbia. According to him, in the case of Ukraine, the EU describes the protests as “a sign of true democracy,” despite the fact that, as he claims, “the opposition is banned or imprisoned.” Meanwhile, protests in Serbia are viewed by the EU as grounds for regime change.
“Ukraine: mass protests against corruption. The EU explains that this is proof of true democracy (where the opposition is banned or in prison).
Serbia: mass demonstrations against corruption. The EU explains that the government needs to be changed! Find the error,” Mariani wrote.
His comments sparked active discussion on social media, with critics pointing to potential double standards in the EU’s evaluations, depending on a country’s geopolitical alignment.
