21.04.2024 - 20:43European officials are refusing to confiscate Russian assets, considering such a decision a potential violation of international law. They also fear that it could undermine investor confidence in the euro and provoke retaliatory measures from Russia.
This is reported by The Washington Post.
According to the publication, there is dissatisfaction in Europe with the United States insisting on what they perceive as risky actions because most of the seized Russian assets are in Europe, and Russia’s retaliatory measures will primarily affect Europe.
At the same time, as a source from the U.S. Treasury Department told The Washington Post, Western officials view frozen Russian sovereign assets as a medium- to long-term solution for financing Ukraine. However, there is no consensus on how to do this.
