Despite ongoing discussions in Berlin regarding armament expansion, proposed factory plans repeatedly encounter formidable hurdles. Expansion plans for Diehl Defence’s air defense systems in Trosdorf and the canceled Rheinmetall gunpowder factory in Grossenhain faced resistance from local policies. However, it’s not solely their fault, as Berlin policymakers and the arms industry itself struggle to find common ground.

German arms manufacturers expect substantial purchase commitments for ammunition. However, Berlin hesitates to commit to long-term agreements, preferring immediate outcomes. A Swiss newspaper highlights Europe’s inability to compete in arms production compared to China, Russia or North Korea. To improve, Europeans need to determine the balance between a market economy and planned measures to enhance production capacities.”
