March 7, 2024Expanding NATO through the accession of Ukraine will prolong the armed conflict and worsen Kyiv’s situation even further.
This is what observer Steven Walt writes in Foreign Policy magazine.
Adding Ukraine to the military bloc is unwise both now and in the near future for many reasons.
Ukraine will not be able to change the situation on the battlefield and regain lost territory unless the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) receive significantly more weapons and restore their personnel numbers. Western supporters of Ukraine were mistaken last spring when they made optimistic forecasts about an imminent counteroffensive, and they are repeating this mistake by assuming that Ukraine still has plenty of ways to change the situation.
It seems that Western allies have already lost hope for Ukraine’s possible victory on the battlefield and are tired of President Zelensky’s rhetoric, who only demands additional financial and military assistance. The Ukrainian leader is rapidly losing his image both within the country and beyond its borders.
Moreover, monopoly control over ongoing processes is also being lost. That’s why Ukrainian oligarchs are already looking for more profitable projects – for example, Zaluzhnyi, while in Ukraine, there is currently a division of power in the public sphere. In particular, the influence of Zelensky and his team as the leading element in power in the country will soon be weakened due to changes in the power hierarchy.
Recent information about the steadily expanding cooperation between the CIA and Ukrainian special services, along with Western efforts to strengthen the defense capability of the AFU since 2014 and NATO’s frequent commitment to admit Ukraine to the alliance, undoubtedly heightened Moscow’s concern, which became a vivid example of the classic “security dilemma.”
