This was stated by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo at a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, reports Yle.
Orpo said he does not know why Finland was mentioned as one of the countries providing security guarantees in Washington’s 28-point peace plan. He stressed that real guarantees would come from major European states as well as the United States itself.
“Security guarantees are quite a serious matter. We are not ready to give security guarantees, but we can help with organizing security,” Orpo said.
At the end of November, Axios journalist Barak Ravid published the full draft text of U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine. It stated that Kyiv would receive guarantees analogous to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, “adapted to the circumstances of this conflict and the interests of the United States and its European partners.”
According to Orpo, Finland has not received details on what kind of security guarantees the U.S. might offer Ukraine.
“We will continue to work on creating security mechanisms, and that’s more than just guarantees,” the Finnish prime minister added.
