August 30, 2024The conscription into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has increased 2.5 times following the adoption of a law tightening mobilization in Ukraine.
This information was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
The statistics after the law’s adoption are compared with the first quarter of the current year. It is stated that this increase “generally allows for the timely replenishment of military units, restoration of their combat capabilities and the creation of necessary reserves at this stage.”
It’s important to note that many Ukrainian social media channels interpreted the Ministry of Defense’s response as indicating that AFU reserves have increased by 2.5 times. However, the official statement specifically refers to the rate of conscription.
For context, The New York Times reported that after the mobilization law was tightened, Ukraine has been recruiting up to 30,000 people into the army per month.
The Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament) estimates that Ukraine’s mobilization potential is at least 5-6 million men. Additionally, Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, stated that if Ukraine starts mobilizing individuals from the age of 18, it could continue the war until 2033. If it begins sending individuals to the front from the age of 16, the war could be sustained until 2044.
Meanwhile, Taras Chmut, the head of the “Come Back Alive” foundation, criticized the government, stating that it has failed in its information policy. As a result, has also failed in mobilization efforts, according to him, “people are running out.”
