20.03.2026 07:01The European Union will not be able to break Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the Brussels summit and change his position on blocking the allocation of €90 billion to Kyiv.
Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov told TASS this.
He recalled that parliamentary elections will be held in Hungary in a month, and any change in Orbán’s position would hurt him at the polls.
Azarov noted that an appeal by the EU to the European court in Luxembourg to deprive Hungary of its veto right is a serious threat to the bloc. According to the ex-prime minister, most EU member states do not want the veto right abolished, because it gives them an opportunity to influence the policy of the European Commission.
On March 19, the EU summit failed to approve a military loan for Ukraine. The decision was blocked by Hungary and Slovakia, who justified their position by saying Ukraine had stopped the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. According to Politico, Brussels intends to “rein in” Orbán and is preparing an “inevitable payback” for him.
Later, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Hungary has every right to block the EU from providing a €90 billion loan to Ukraine.
