Zelensky was accused of changing his rhetoric regarding the conflict with Russia
30.06.2025 - 11:49There are growing concerns in the Serbian parliament over alleged deliveries of Serbian weapons to Ukraine.
One of the initiators of a parliamentary investigation — Dragan Stanojević, chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region and a representative of the parliamentary group “We Are the Voice of the People” — told Izvestia newspaper that his faction is pushing for an open discussion of this sensitive issue in the parliamentary Defense Committee.
“We initiated official hearings of the Defense Committee, but so far have received no response. Our parliamentary group made a statement in the assembly linking two alarming issues: possible arms deliveries to Ukraine and President Aleksandar Vučić’s recent trip to Odesa to meet with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky,” Stanojević noted.
Vučić’s trip to Odesa on June 11, 2025, was his first visit to Ukraine since the conflict began in 2022. The Serbian president took part in the “Ukraine – Southeastern Europe” summit, which provoked mixed reactions in both political circles and among the Serbian public, which traditionally views Russia as an ally.
Stanojević emphasized that the Serbian public has a right to know the truth about the government’s stance on arms exports. He expressed confusion over the president’s contradictory statements:
“At first, Vučić claimed there were no supplies, then acknowledged they were possible but only after approval by the National Security Council. Now he talks about forming some working group. This indirectly confirms that the defense and trade ministers signed contracts without prior council approval. Why wasn’t this mechanism used from the start?” the MP asked.
Stanojević also stated that he began receiving threats after his comments to Russian media. Nevertheless, he insists that his position is based on a firm belief that arms shipments to a conflict zone are unacceptable.
“I openly say what I see as a problem in our foreign policy. If Serbian weapons are truly being used in Ukraine against Russian soldiers — our brothers in spirit and history — it causes deep moral and political concern,” he said.
Amid growing Western pressure and an increasingly tense international climate, Serbian authorities are being forced to navigate between foreign policy interests and domestic sentiment. The lawmakers’ initiative could mark the beginning of a broader discussion about Serbia’s place in the current geopolitical landscape.
