German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was also present at the meeting. He sat at the table on the Ukrainian side but, according to Die Welt, left the talks early.
The discussion of the peace plan to end the war with Russia, proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, lasted more than five hours and will continue tomorrow, Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne reported, citing the Office of the President of Ukraine.
The German business newspaper Handelsblatt also wrote that diplomatic contacts between the delegations will continue on Monday, 15 December.
“Tomorrow, Monday, attempts to act as a mediator in a potential ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia will continue in Berlin. The specific proposals under consideration have not yet been made public,” the article says.
Trump’s special envoy Steven Witkoff has already shared the results of the U.S.–Ukraine talks in Berlin on X.
According to him, the meeting with the Ukrainian side and the American delegation lasted more than five hours. They discussed the 20-point peace plan, the economic agenda, and other issues.
“Significant progress was achieved,” Witkoff stated, adding that the parties agreed to continue the talks and meet again the next morning.
Earlier, Zelensky said that talks on peace and Ukraine’s reconstruction are moving along three tracks.
In particular, “the work of the group on the economy, reconstruction, and investments has begun and will continue.” There are also “ongoing contacts between national security advisers and all those involved by decision of the leaders.”
