Hungary announced support for China’s peace initiative, proposing a six-point plan to end the war in Ukraine

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest supports the China-Brazil peace plan for Ukraine, which involves freezing the front line.

The Hungarian diplomat conveyed this in a conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

“The six-point consensus jointly proposed by China and Brazil has laid a good foundation for future peace negotiations. Hungary fully agrees with this important peace initiative,” Szijjártó was quoted as saying on the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Wang Yi stated that the world needs “more objective, balanced, and constructive voices, as well as more pragmatic and effective efforts aimed at promoting peace.”

“China is ready to continue working with all like-minded countries, to create conditions for peace, and to make efforts for the ultimate realization of peace talks,” the Chinese minister said.

In May 2024, China and Brazil issued a joint communiqué outlining their proposals for resolving the Russia-Ukraine war:

1. China and Brazil call on “all parties” to adhere to three principles of de-escalation: refrain from “fanning the flames,” expanding the battlefield, escalating the front line, and avoiding provocations.
2. The countries see dialogue and negotiations as the only viable path to resolving the “Ukrainian crisis.”
3. Preventing a humanitarian crisis and avoiding attacks on civilians or civilian objects, as well as protecting civilians.
4. China and Brazil deem the use of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons unacceptable and call attacks on nuclear power plants and other peaceful nuclear facilities impermissible.
5. Efforts should be made to enhance international cooperation in the areas of energy, currency, finance, trade, food security, and critical infrastructure security.
6. China and Brazil call for opposing the “division of the world into isolated political or economic groups.”

However, the document does not mention the Russian Federation explicitly, although China emphasizes the necessity of Russia’s mandatory presence in any peace negotiations.

Earlier, Trump’s advisors suggested that if he were elected president, he should freeze the war in Ukraine along the front line. In response, the Office of the President of Ukraine rejected Trump’s advisors’ plan to freeze the war in Ukraine.
