Slovakia, following Hungary, is halting diesel exports to Ukraine
19.02.2026 - 14:01Hungary is suspending supplies of diesel fuel to Ukraine.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced this on the social network X.
“Supplies will not resume until oil transit to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline is restored,” he stressed.
According to the minister, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has decided not to resume oil transit “for political reasons, deliberately putting Hungary’s energy supply at risk.” At the same time, Budapest plays an important role in ensuring Ukraine’s energy security, Szijjártó added, noting that most of Ukraine’s imports of gas, electricity, and diesel fuel come from Hungary or pass through it.
“We cannot be expected to guarantee another country’s energy security when our own energy supply is under threat. Energy cooperation must be mutual and based on respect, not pressure,” the statement continues.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha explained the halt in shipments via the Druzhba oil pipeline starting January 27 by saying that Hungary had kept quiet about a Russian strike on a section of the pipeline on Ukrainian territory. In response, Budapest said the Ukrainian side allegedly cut the power supply to that pipeline section. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on February 15 accused Ukraine of deliberately delaying the resumption of exports.
As Reuters reported, the Hungarian energy company MOL has already asked the government in Budapest to authorize the use of strategic oil reserves. If eastern supplies are not restored in the coming days, the company said that roughly 250,000 tons of crude oil would need to be released in the first stage.
According to the analytics company ExPro, in 2025 Ukraine transported about 9.73 million tons of Russian oil through the southern branch of the Druzhba pipeline.
