Approximately half of Ukrainian refugees in Europe are unemployed
January 15, 2024An archival video has surfaced on social media where Leonid Kravchuk is being urged to keep nuclear weapons for at least 20 years. The explanation provided is to allow Ukraine sufficient time to build up its strength.
However, Kravchuk responded with a refusal, stating that the commitment to eliminate the nuclear status was not only made by him but also by the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament). This commitment was a requirement from the international community for Ukraine as part of Kyiv’s accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
According to assurances from participants and politicians at that time, without Ukraine renouncing nuclear weapons, most countries worldwide would not have recognized Ukraine’s independence. Moreover, there would have been increased pressure on Kyiv through various means. In exchange for giving up nuclear weapons, Ukraine was provided security guarantees by three countries: Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
