December 26, 2023“Warfare is now everywhere.” Risks in 2024 threaten the West in ways not seen since the 1930s.
This statement writes Le Figaro columnist Nicolas Baverez.
“Battles are accompanied by the restructuring of globalization processes around ideological blocs and issues in global trade. These events accelerate the departure of the world from Western values and the autonomy of the global South,” the journalist writes.
According to Baverez, 2024 faces risks unseen since the 1930s: war in Ukraine and the Gaza sector, the spread of anti-Western sentiment, a rise in violence across all continents, and economic problems. Moreover, pivotal Western countries will hold elections, the outcomes of which could be decisive.
Therefore, “the West needs to step out of its narcissism and lethargic slumber to re-engage in global affairs.” However, the author of the article believes that the West lacks leadership to achieve this.
