13 seconds of silence: Kyiv’s mayor didn’t immediately answer a question about trusting Trump
23.02.2026 - 08:41Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has questioned the reliability of U.S. leader Donald Trump.
This was reported by the British broadcaster BBC.
In an interview, Zelensky answered a journalist’s question about whether he trusts the man in the White House, including when it comes to security guarantees. Zelensky said Kyiv also needs support from Congress, because the guarantees must be secured for 30 years—by that time, the president will have changed.
The BBC article notes that the Ukrainian leader effectively cast doubt on his trust in his American counterpart.
“In other words, Donald Trump may be an unreliable partner, but he won’t remain president forever,” the outlet writes.
On February 20, Zelensky said that Russia and the United States are demanding that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the Donbas in order to resolve the conflict. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said Ukraine should adopt a more flexible stance more quickly on a peaceful settlement of the crisis.
