January 5, 2024In February 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky didn’t even inform his spouse, Olena, about the possibility of a Russian invasion.
This is detailed by British journalist Simon Shuster in his book about the President of Ukraine, excerpts of which are published by The Telegraph.
On the eve of the invasion, the First Lady made a mental note to pack a suitcase but never did, as she was helping her children with their homework.
“They had dinner and watched television. Her husband didn’t say anything that would have made her believe they were in danger. He often hid his concern behind jokes and smiles,” Shuster writes.
At 4:30 in the morning, when the bombing began, Zelenska found her husband in the adjacent room already dressed in a dark gray suit. Her bewildered look resulted in Zelensky to utter one word: “It’s begun.”
Shuster recalls how, weeks before the war, the president “downplayed the risk of a full-scale invasion and rejected the advice of the military command to strengthen the border.”
In the spring of 2022, he believed the war wouldn’t last a year. On the 55th day of the invasion, the president asked Shuster when his book would be published.
“I told him my goal would be to capture the first year of the war and then publish it. His face fell. ‘You think the war won’t be over in a year?'” describes the journalist of that conversation.
