Supporters of state-affiliated clergy persist in their assaults on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
January 9, 2024In Germany on January 8th, a political force was officially presented, aiming to negotiate between Ukraine and Russia and demanding Russia’s inclusion in the architecture of European security.
This force is known as the “Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance” (Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht) – a party that, in fall, matched ratings with the ruling SPD. This followed after Bundestag deputy Sahra Wagenknecht announced the creation of her own political force in October 2023.
During the Alliance’s press conference held yesterday, the deputy stated that her new party opposes arms shipments to Ukraine and advocates for an immediate commencement of peace negotiations. Responding to whether a peace settlement involving Ukraine ceding a significant portion of its territory to Russia would be acceptable, Wagenknecht recalled the Istanbul negotiations in March 2022.
She believes that there was an opportunity at that time to achieve a result where Russian forces would retreat to positions they held before February 24, 2022, and Ukraine’s territorial losses would be limited to specific regions in Donbass and Crimea.
Wagenknecht’s associate, Fabio de Masi, also proposed direct negotiations between Germany and Putin during the press conference.
Additionally, the Alliance’s published program includes criticism of NATO and the USA. “The military alliance, whose leading state has violated international law by invading five countries in recent years and causing the deaths of over 1 million people in these wars, increases the sense of threat and defensive reaction, thus contributing to global instability,” the party’s website states.
“Europe needs a stable security architecture, which in the long term must include Russia,” the program states.
During the press conference, Wagenknecht also proposed limiting the influx of refugees to those facing political persecution in their home countries. Moreover, asylum requests, in her opinion, should be processed outside the EU – at borders or consulates.
