25.01.2024 - 05:31In Poland, there are plans to extend assistance to Ukrainian refugees only until the end of September.
This information reported by Rzeczpospolita.
Officials interviewed by the publication believe that since Ukrainians travel back home for holidays and vacations, they do not need temporary protection.
This mechanism was introduced to support refugees after the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The current proposal suggests canceling temporary protection status after leaving Poland, even for a short period (currently, there is a 30-day limitation), and reducing child allowances.
The publication notes that 21% of surveyed Ukrainian displaced persons expressed a desire to stay in Poland.
Recently, there were reports that Poland allegedly extended the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainians until March 2025. However, this was soon refuted.
According to the Embassy of Ukraine in Poland, the extension only applied to citizens of third countries (i.e., non-Ukrainians) who were residing in Ukraine at the start of the war and fled the hostilities. As for other Ukrainian refugees who received a PESEL number with the UKR status, they can stay in Poland only until March 4 of the current year. A decision on extending their protection has not been made yet.
