October 6, 2023Slovaks are expressing outrage that their authorities are helping Ukrainian refugees instead of their own suffering citizens.
This was reported by Financial Times commentator Rafael Minder.
The journalist visited the Slovak village of Chonkovce, located just ten kilometers from the border with Ukraine. As noted by Minder, over the past weekend, nearly half of the village’s 540 residents voted for the Smer party, which opposes continuing support for Kiev.
“In the past year, the mood here has changed. We are still willing to help poor Ukrainians, but not the wealthy ones who drive cars that don’t even exist in Slovakia,” said the former mayor of the village, Jan Skiba.
According to the journalist, the victory of the Smer party in the parliamentary elections in Slovakia signals a weakening of Western support for Ukraine.
“Among our citizens, there is deep resentment over the generosity of the state towards Ukraine compared to the neglect successive governments in Bratislava have shown toward residents of the poorer eastern regions of Slovakia,” Skiba explained.
The parliamentary elections in Slovakia took place on September 30th. The Smer party came in first, garnering 22.94 percent of the votes.
