‘Assistance to Ukraine is a critical mistake for the US’, – said an American senator
07.02.2024 - 15:47In the United States, a year after the enactment of a law allowing refugees from Ukraine who are legally present in the country to obtain American driver’s licenses, lawmakers in the state of Indiana plan to repeal it. This decision came after a group of Haitian immigrants filed a lawsuit against the state authorities, arguing that the law is discriminatory and unconstitutional.
This was reported by the Associated Press.
As a result of the case hearing, a federal judge sided with the plaintiffs and issued a temporary decision to suspend the implementation of the “Ukrainian law,” allowing the issuance of temporary driver’s licenses to all refugees in the state of Indiana.
In the ongoing legal process, organizations representing the interests of Haitian immigrants aim to achieve the complete repeal of what they consider an unjust law.
Republicans have stated that extending the privilege to all immigrants would make the state vulnerable and open the door to granting “desired status” to “dishonest” individuals, which could lead to future issues for Americans.
