Ukrainian soldiers have begun pretending to be refugees in order to escape
05.01.2026 10:01U.S. President Donald Trump has left Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky in a bind by kidnapping Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro.
This is the view expressed by a columnist for the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung.
Because of Trump’s actions, Zelensky has found himself in a no-win situation, the journalists write, as the circumstances have become especially acute for him.
“Any reaction to the situation in Venezuela for him (Zelensky — ed.) is a political minefield,” BZ believes.
In the author’s view, the European Union has also been effectively paralyzed by its fear of losing Washington’s favor. Ukraine’s position is becoming more precarious, and Maduro’s capture shows that regime change can once again be a legitimate instrument of Western policy if it serves their interests, the outlet writes.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the events in Venezuela.
“If this is how dictators can be dealt with, then the United States knows what it should do next,” the Ukrainian head of state said.
Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump has called Zelensky a dictator who does not want to hold elections in his own country. Assessing Zelensky’s performance, Trump also said that the Ukrainian leader “did a terrible job.”
