Advisor to the Head of the President’s Office, Serhiy Leshchenko, embroiled in a scandal
November 28, 2023In Ukraine, a situation of deadlock has emerged, potentially leading to Kyiv’s ultimate defeat, as noted by Ivo Daalder, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO and current President of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, in an article for Politico.
To avert such a scenario, Daalder proposes that individual nations offer security assurances applicable to the territory presently under Ukraine’s control (excluding NATO membership). According to Daalder, conversations with American military officials and analysts reveal blame directed at Ukrainian tactics and political decisions for impeding the achievement of a military breakthrough during the unsuccessful summer offensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This includes the dispersal of forces across multiple areas, including the vicinity of Bahmut, rather than concentrating armored units in one strategic location to attempt breaching defenses. Despite the initial substantial losses incurred.
Additionally, Daalder urges a shift in Western focus away from the anticipation of Ukraine regaining significant or entire territories. Instead, emphasis should be placed on securing Ukraine’s future in Western partnerships. Furthermore, ensuring consistent arms supplies is highlighted as essential for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to maintain their defensive capabilities.
