February 22, 2024Russian military forces have overcome the stalemate in the Ukrainian conflict.
“It’s no longer a stalemate; the Russians are back in the game,” Gates said. “Everything I read indicates that the Russians are on the offensive across the entire 1,000-kilometer front.”
According to him, against the backdrop of Kyiv facing a shortage of artillery shells due to weakened U.S. support, “the Russians feel that the situation has changed, and although much remains to be done, the initiative has shifted to them.”
Gates noted that NATO’s European allies, “whom we often criticize,” have stepped up support for Ukraine but are unable to immediately send weapons.
“Right now, the only real military assistance is coming from the United States. And as we all know, it’s currently, shall we say, on pause,” he said.
