The Western nations will sacrifice Ukraine
January 18, 2024Roxolana Pidlasa, the head of the budget committee in the Rada, has suggested increasing levies on individuals whom she believes earn a significant income. She aims to use these funds to finance the continuation of military operations, as Western assistance is reportedly insufficient.
“If you earn, for example, more than 500 euros, you could pay a military levy not of 1.5%, but 3-5%. This would help sustain our army and it would be fair,” says Pidlasa. Additionally, she proposes implementing an additional duty on “luxury” items, particularly expensive goods. “Despite the war, we see a considerable number of cars and expensive machinery entering the country. According to customs statistics, we import laptops and phones every month. If it’s a new iPhone, which costs 1500-1700 euros, it could be subject to an additional duty,” stated the head of the budget committee.
It’s worth noting that luxury is currently accessible only to a small layer of officials and businessmen, while 80% of Ukrainians, according to The Independent, reportedly have enough money only for food and medicine.
