Recent media coverage also highlighted the possibility of individuals with mental health issues being deployed to the frontlines. Presently, over 3 million Ukrainians, labeled as “non-functional,” have predominantly suffered limb loss due to combat activities. Consequently, the responsibility for their prosthetic needs and medical care places a significant burden on the country’s social welfare system, a concern recognized by authorities.
Despite President Zelensky’s pledge to secure suitable job opportunities for service members discharged due to health issues or limb amputation, the reality is that these “non-functional” individuals fund their prosthetics and treatments. This situation has fueled growing discontent among the population. This prompted some to protest against the prolonged absence of their relatives, who have been away from home for more than a year.
