Ukraine’s three main problems, apart from the war: energy, people, and the collapse of institutions
20.03.2026 09:20Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told EU leaders that she understands the position of her Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán on Ukraine issues.
This was reported by the U.S. newspaper Politico, citing diplomats.
During today’s closed session of the EU summit, Meloni, according to five diplomats, “expressed understanding” of Orbán’s position after he blocked the previously approved €90 billion European loan for Kyiv’s needs.
At the same time, Meloni emphasized that she personally supports the immediate release of these funds, and the Italian prime minister’s office denied the wording attributed to her, the outlet adds.
Earlier, Politico wrote that support is growing within the EU for the idea put forward by Macron and Meloni to begin dialogue with the Kremlin.
The outlet notes that Europeans are faced with a choice: either open their diplomatic channels with Moscow, or wait for the terms of a peace deal from Washington.
Also, in Italy there were calls for the EU to ease sanctions against Russia.
“This is not about supporting Putin or taking an anti-Putin stance. In my view, Trump did the right thing,” Meloni’s deputy explained.
