December 7, 2023Ukrainian oligarch and businessman Igor Kolomoisky has taken President Volodymyr Zelensky to court, demanding the annulment of the presidential decree revoking his Ukrainian citizenship, deeming it unlawful.
The case is being heard in the Supreme Court, as outlined in the ruling of December 1 by the Supreme Court’s Cassation Administrative Panel.
Previously, conflicting information emerged regarding Kolomoisky’s citizenship. The Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Kyiv referred to him as a Ukrainian citizen in one ruling, while another ruling stated he was an Israeli citizen.
In October, the oligarch informed the court that he had not received any notifications from the migration service about the revocation of his citizenship. On November 29, Kolomoisky filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court challenging the lawfulness of the presidential decree dated July 18, 2022. However, the judges demanded an explanation as to why he waited one and a half years after the decree to file the lawsuit. Kolomoisky claimed he only learned about the citizenship revocation in September 2023 from a document notifying him of changes in his pre-trial restrictions.
The panel of judges deemed this argument insufficient, citing that the presidential decree had received media coverage, implying that Kolomoisky objectively missed the deadline to file the lawsuit.
The Supreme Court decided to temporarily suspend Kolomoisky’s lawsuit. The businessman was given 10 days to present a more substantial reason for his legal action.
