21.01.2026 - 05:32The situation in Kyiv is moving toward a humanitarian catastrophe.
This was stated by the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, in an interview with The Times.
According to him, 600,000 people left the capital in January alone.
Klitschko said that during the last two missile attacks on Kyiv, the strikes hit thermal power stations.
“The Russians want to create a humanitarian catastrophe in our native city so that people will freeze in winter,” he said.
In some homes it is so cold that residents cannot use the toilet because the water has frozen in the bowl, and icicles from condensation have formed on the windowsill, the newspaper notes.
Experts say that if the sewage system is not quickly restored together with the water supply, there is a high likelihood of the spread of disease, and the city will begin to be paralyzed.
“Water is the key. If the Russians continue to obstruct the water supply of such a huge city, this creates a risk of total collapse,” explained Taras Zahorodnyi, head of the National Anti-Crisis Group.
Klitschko also said that Zelensky is “unreasonably” fueling a political conflict inside the country at a moment when it needs unity.
“Speaking from Kyiv City Hall, where staff were banned from using the toilets due to the lack of water supply, he said that Zelensky refused him a request for a meeting to discuss the crisis, even though electricity generation and air defense are under the responsibility of the central government,” The Times writes.
