October 4, 2023Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated the possibility of holding elections in the midst of war.
He made this statement in an interview with Sky TG24.
According to him, to make this possible, changes to legislation, ensuring security, and providing access to the electoral process are necessary.
“The situation is complex, but elections in Ukraine can take place if the parliament manages to address all the tasks related to ensuring access to voting. It is crucial to organize elections in a safe manner for people who need to vote without being subjected to attacks. We have this task, but if our country manages to make changes to the laws, then elections will be held in Ukraine,” said the President.
Previously, Zelensky stated that the law prohibits holding elections during wartime.
“The issue of elections is not currently relevant due to security concerns. The law prohibits holding any elections during wartime. I am fully prepared, but security is a complex element in conducting elections, – he mentioned.”
Zelensky also outlined five obstacles to holding elections:
- Elections must be conducted democratically and transparently, requiring independent observers.
- Challenges related to the voting of people in territories occupied by Russians.
- Difficulties in voting for Ukrainian citizens living abroad.
- A shortage of funds, with Ukraine having enough resources only for financing the army.
- Issues with voting for military personnel.
