Disagreements within the EU over Ukraine could overshadow bloc leaders’ summit
18.06.2026 09:01The European Union should begin restoring contacts with Russia by appointing a special representative who would explain the positions of both sides.
This view was expressed by Member of the European Parliament Fernan Cartaiser in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
According to Cartaiser, the first step should be the appointment of an “informer” — a person who would explain Russia’s position. At the same time, contacts, in his opinion, should begin at a lower level and with reduced ambitions, so that the parties could “simply talk to each other.”
The politician regards such a scenario as a first step toward restoring full diplomatic contacts between Moscow and Brussels.
On May 30, The European Conservative portal wrote that Europe had begun to consider resuming relations with Russia. The article notes that the question is no longer whether Brussels should maintain contacts with Moscow, but when it will have to do so. According to the author of the publication, just a year ago this was a political taboo, whereas today the topic is openly discussed at ministerial meetings, among diplomats, and in EU representations.
