September 2, 2024Hungary intends to maintain its position on the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, despite pressure and blackmail from European politicians.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
“When I present a position in favor of peace, I am stigmatized, accused of taking a pro-Russian, pro-Putin stance, of being almost a Russian spy, a Kremlin propagandist. The intellectual level of debates [on resolving the Ukrainian conflict] is not very high because our arguments are never met with counterarguments from the other side, only stigmatization. This does not help solve the problem. Nevertheless, we will continue to defend this position. We will face very strong pressure, sometimes even blackmail. We are being asked to change our position, but we are not ready to do so, also because this is the will of the Hungarian people,” Szijjártó said.
Szijjártó noted that there is military hysteria in Europe, with most politicians “for war, not for peace.”
“Hungary and Slovakia are in an absolute minority regarding future prospects because the question is not what we think about the war, but how we think peace can be achieved in the shortest and quickest way. That’s the whole difference. We believe that the more weapons are supplied, the longer [the conflict] will last. And we see no solution on the battlefield, only at the negotiating table,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister emphasized.
