February 4, 2024The prospect of Donald Trump’s reelection as President of the United States is causing German officials and many of their NATO colleagues to unofficially discuss whether the Alliance can survive if the United States were to leave it.
The New York Times reports this, citing sources.
German officials are beginning to talk about the emergence of a “new, complex, and troubling world that will have serious consequences for European and transatlantic security.”
Officials warn that if American funding dries up and Russia emerges victorious, its next target will be closer to Berlin.
“Many German officials say that Putin’s best strategic hope is to divide NATO,” the article says.
Their immediate concern is growing pessimism about whether the United States will continue to fund Ukraine’s fight, the publication notes.
Recall that in 2020, as President of the United States, Donald Trump stated that the United States would withdraw from NATO and would not defend Europe in case of an attack.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal wrote that the EU believes they should support Ukraine not only for moral reasons but also in their own interests – to prevent Russia from becoming a military force capable of attacking NATO, “if and when support for the alliance from the United States weakens.”
