‘NATO should tell Kyiv the truth: Ukraine is still far from membership in the alliance’, – CNN commentator says
10.07.2024 - 17:40NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg suggested the possibility of ending the war without the return of all Ukrainian territories.
He made this statement at a NATO public forum.
“If there is a new ceasefire now, a new agreement, we must be 100% sure that the war will end at that point, regardless of where that line is. Therefore, I firmly believe that during the cessation of hostilities, we must ensure that Ukraine has the capabilities to deter future aggression from Russia,” said Stoltenberg.
He added that after a ceasefire on the front lines, Ukraine needs security guarantees.
“And, of course, the best and strongest security guarantee will be Article 5. Therefore, I believe that the way to ensure the end of this is actually membership in NATO,” Stoltenberg added.
It should be recalled that earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking about Ukraine’s goals in the war, initially stated that preserving people and the state is more important than returning territory, and later that the Russian army must withdraw beyond the borders.
Zelensky recently did not mention the return to the borders as a condition for ending the war. However, Russia is not prepared for such conditions.
