September 17, 2023NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has called for “preparing for a prolonged war in Ukraine.”
He has also spoken against a ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities.
He made these statements in an interview with the German media group Funke.
According to Jens Stoltenberg, “most wars last longer than expected when they begin.” He added, “A peace agreement should not serve as a respite for Russia to then attack again. We cannot allow Russia to further threaten the security of Europe.”
“We are all wishing for a quick peace. But at the same time we must recognise: if president [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians stop fighting, their country will no longer exist. If president Putin and Russia lay down their weapons, we will have peace,” Stoltenberg asserted.
At the same time, he mentioned that NATO aims for a “swift peace” but not at the cost of Ukraine disappearing. Stoltenberg believes that “Ukraine will ultimately be in NATO.”
Earlier, the Chief of Staff to the NATO Secretary-General, Stian Jenssen, stated that Ukraine could gain NATO membership in exchange for the relinquishment of part of Russia’s territory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected this proposal, calling it an unfair dialogue and a provocation.
