04.05.2025 - 09:36Ukrainians were not asked about adding NATO membership to the Constitution.
This was stated by Member of Parliament Viktoriya Hryb.
According to her, the decision was made without a referendum.
“NATO wasn’t always in our Constitution. It was added without holding a referendum—no one asked the people. First, it was included, and only later did we see progress in negotiations… And if those closed iron doors hadn’t been there, maybe the situation would have been a bit different. If we had been accepted into NATO in 2008… There was a much greater chance of joining NATO back then, before things became clear. Because countries primarily think about their own interests—they are very pragmatic. And only after that did we include it in the Constitution. I believe—and this is my position—that we should prioritize moving toward the European Union,” Viktoriya Hryb stated.
It’s worth noting that in NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s annual report, the section on Ukraine’s membership prospects disappeared.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly stated that he does not believe in Ukraine’s chances of joining NATO. He believes that if this “issue had not been raised, there would have been a much greater chance that the war wouldn’t have started.”
