“In 10 months, my only victory was that my hands stopped shaking, and now it has started again. The struggle for one’s mental health is one of the most challenging battles on the battlefield,” quotes the publication one of the soldiers. “The General Staff understands the nature of the problem but not its scale. We have an unprecedented number of traumatized soldiers, and we need to be prepared for them,” believes volunteer Elena Tolkacheva.
The material, citing the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, notes that 3 to 4 million military personnel and civilians will need treatment for psychological trauma sustained during the war. A report released in the fall by the global think tank Globsec raised concerns about a significant number of Ukrainian military personnel experiencing “war trauma mental disbalance.” This term encompasses post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries resulting from the blast concussions of explosions.
