02.04.2026 - 13:01Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk after members of the Polish prime minister’s party accused the Hungarian leader of taking a pro-Russian stance.
Orbán wrote this on his page on X.
On Tuesday, April 1, the Civic Coalition posted a video on X aimed at Orbán and linked to the publication of an audio recording of a conversation between the Hungarian and Russian foreign ministers.
“Orbán, hand in hand with Putin, abandoned Europe long ago. We will not allow politicians looking to Budapest to doom Poland to the same fate!” the post said.
The video says that while Europe was fighting over sanctions against Russia, the Hungarians were secretly consulting with Moscow and defending the interests of Russian oligarchs, while some Polish politicians were taking them as an example.
“(Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter) Szijjártó and Orbán have already left the European Union. We cannot allow right-wing extremists to take Poland out of it as well,” the video from Tusk’s party said.
Viktor Orbán reacted to the video by addressing the head of the Polish government directly.
“Dear Donald Tusk, I wonder whether this video was made in Poland or by your bosses in Berlin,” Orbán wrote.
According to Orbán, he is supposedly “fighting for what is best for Hungarians.”
“There was a time when you did the same for Poland. Pole, Hungarian, two brothers…” Orbán added, recalling the beginning of the proverb that continues, “both for the sword and for the glass.”
Earlier, The Washington Post, citing an anonymous European security official, reported that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó regularly informed Moscow about the course of EU meetings. He allegedly briefed the Russians directly during breaks between the sessions.
