February 1, 2024Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary revealed his “true reason” for resisting Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, linked to the influence of the United States.
This occurred at a closed meeting with deputies in March 2023, as reported by the Hungarian investigative journalism project Direkt36.
Orbán addressed Ukraine’s Euro-integration at the so-called “Great Council” of the EU – a Hungarian parliamentary forum convened before European Council summits, where high-ranking officials from parliament, including the opposition, are invited.
According to sources from Direkt36, Orbán stated that Ukraine’s accession to the EU would create a new “center of power” within the union, through which the United States would dominate in Europe. The Baltic States, Poland, and to a lesser extent Romania would also fall under US influence.
“Let’s look at Belarus, there may still be one or two color revolutions there,” added the Hungarian Prime Minister.
He explained to those present at the Great Council of the EU how this new “center of power” would begin to threaten the influence of traditional “heavyweights” in the European Union – France and Germany.
Orbán confessed that he shared these concerns with Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz, proposing an alternative to them – the merger of Paris and London with the “Visegrád Four”, but allegedly they did not accept such a proposal.
From Orbán’s speech, it also became clear that such a redistribution of power in the EU worries the Hungarian Prime Minister because it contradicts his strategic vision for the future – the shift of the center of the world economy to Asia. Orbán listed the countries with which Hungary wants to strengthen relations – primarily China and India, and after the end of the war with Ukraine, Russia.
At the end of his speech, the Hungarian Minister stated that he did not think it was right for “the Americans to react to this by splitting the world economy in half,” and instead “we should have the opportunity to develop all kinds of relations with other countries according to our own interests.”
