15.07.2025 - 16:23Hungary is calling on the European Union to impose sanctions against Ukraine over the death of an ethnic Hungarian who, according to Budapest, was beaten in a military recruitment center.
This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
“József Sebestyén was beaten to death during forced mobilization in Zakarpattia. Today, the Hungarian government has initiated in Brussels the immediate inclusion in the EU’s human rights sanctions list of those Ukrainian officials responsible for the death of a Hungarian citizen,” the head of the Hungarian government said.
Earlier, Orbán urged Brussels to take measures against forced mobilization in Ukraine.
He stated that it is unacceptable “for people to be beaten to death in a country at war, and if the victim is also a citizen of an EU member state, the European Union cannot remain silent.”
Prior to this, Hungary summoned the Ukrainian ambassador over the death of József Sebestyén, who was reportedly beaten to death with iron rods by military officials for refusing to serve.
